Plot and characters

The basic concept of the series concerns a secret British government organization called Hellsing. This organization was formed several hundred years ago by either Abraham van Helsing or his descendants to fight vampires across Britain. As the first episode opens, a vampire is ravaging the English village of Cheddar. Integra Hellsing tells the police to stand down, as the first few squads have already been killed by the vampire and become ghouls (in Hellsing, ghouls are similar to zombies under a vampire's control). She sends in Hellsing's most powerful operative, Alucard. Alucard comes upon the vampire as he is about to murder the last survivor of the police forces, Seras Victoria. In order to kill the vampire he shoots through Seras, mortally wounding her, but because he likes her spirit he offers her the choice of dying human or becoming a vampire.
In the anime, they fight vampires who are artificially created using a chip that is implanted in a living person. It is called a Freak Chip, and the resulting vampires are called Freaks. One trait of the Freak Chip is a pattern in the circuitry that looks like a swastika. These artificial vampires have new abilities, but are nothing compared to the powers of the true vampires. To create these copies, the makers of the Freak Chip (Millenium) needed a real Vampire; Incognito. Incognito does not appear in the manga series and was created only for the anime. The anime plot, mainly follows the battle of the Hellsing organization against the Freaks.
Main characters
Lord Alucard - He is the most powerful vampire known, perhaps even one of the most ancient. He is a servant of the Hellsing family, for reasons yet unknown. He weilds 2 heavy handguns, the Casull and the Jackal. Both of his weapons fire blessed silver bullets. It is suggested that he is Vlad the Impaler, but he is never formally recognized as actually being Count Dracula.
Sir Integra Wingates Hellsing - She is the daughter of Sir Hellsing. She became the leader of the Hellsing Organization when she was 13, following her father's death. She is very intelligent and strong of will. She seems to have a deep connection with Alucard.
Seras Victoria - Alucard's fledging draculina. She is very unsure about being a true vampire at the beginning of the series, but later embraces her true vampric calling. She weilds her weapon, the Vladimir Halconnen, a 30mm anti-freak cannon that fires incindiary rounds.
Paladin Alexander Anderson - The Iscariot Organization's most prized weapon. A regenerator priest. He weiles blessed bayonets, quotes scripture, and also has a "magic" of his own (pages from the Bible attached to the wall by bayonets) when he fights Alucard to keep Alucard from using his magic against him.
Incognito - A true vampire from the "dark continent" a.k.a. Africa. Like Alucard, he uses dark magic to fight. His human weapon of choice is enchanted ArmsCor 40 mm Grenade Launcher that fires dark, spherical curses. It is thought that his character is based off Count Orlock from the movie, Nosforatu.
Secondary characters
Walter C. Dornez - He is a retired member of the Hellsing Organisation. He serves now as the Hellsing family butler and protector. His nickname is The Angel of Death. He uses piano/razor wire to dispatch his enemies, slicing them into bits. He has a close relationship to Integra and Alucard.
Enrico Maxwell - The overzealous religious leader of the Iscariot Organization (Vatican Section 13). He commands Paladan Alexander Anderson. Originally, he grew up with Anderson and they were best friends.
Luke and Jan Valentine - Luke and Jan are brothers that are artificial vampires. They both lay seige to the Hellsing manor and kill many of their troops, turning them into ghouls. Jan leads the ghoul assult and Luke goes after Alucard. Luke fights Alucard directly and his speed abilities make Alucard mistake him for a true vampire. At the end of their battle, Luke's pitiful defeat makes Alucard realize that he cannot tell freaks from real vampires.
Helena - An ancient true vampire that appears as a child. She is very wise and lives by herself in an old mansion. She is Sera's role model. She is consumed by Incognito, but still lives for a short while. Her death and her teachings helps Seras embrace her 'inner' vampire.
